Rila Monastery

Distance: 100 km

Transportation Mode: Car

Entrance Fee: Free

Founded all the way back in the 10th Century, Rila Monastery is the largest monastery in Bulgaria. Located in Rila Mountains, approximately 100 km Northwest of Bansko, it can be easily reached by car. The monastery has been named after its founder – St. Ivan of Rila, who was the first Bulgarian hermit and is now considered as the patron Saint of the Bulgarian Nation.

The entire complex covers more than 8,7 ha and has an interesting rectangular shape. Right at the heart of the inner court, you will find the incredible main church, which is covered with stunning frescoes on the outside. Right next to it, you will also notice the 23-meters tall tower, which once served as a defensive tower and is now the oldest structure in the religious complex.

Once upon a time, Rila Monastery was Bulgaria’s religious center. Nowadays, it is one of the most important cultural and historical sights you can visit in Bulgaria. No wonder that it has been added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites! Just stroll around and soak in the beauty of the mountainous scenery around you; Rila Monastery is nestled between lush, green hills populated by spectacular pine trees.

Entrance to the Rila Monastery Complex is free of charge making this a great budget-friendly day trip from Bansko. However, several museums and guided tour options within the complex are available for an additional fee. You can also book a guided tour from Bansko to Rila Monastery here.

Stob Earth Pyramids - One of the Best Day Trips from Bansko

Stob Earth Pyramids

Distance: 70 km

Transportation Mode: Car

Entrance Fee: 2 lv per adult

Just 70 km from Bansko lies the small village of Stob, nestled at the foot of the Rila Mountains. While relatively unknown, Stob is home to one of Bulgaria’s most fascinating natural wonders – the Stob Earth Pyramids.

Formed around 2 million years ago, when the entire area was covered by a shallow lake, these unique rock formations have been shaped by natural erosion over time. Varying in size, some of the pyramids rise up to 12 meters high, but all share a distinctive cone-like shape. Many are even topped with flat stones, giving the whimsical impression that they’re wearing hats.

After parking in the small lot at the entrance, a short and mostly flat trail leads to the pyramids. The final stretch of the path becomes narrow, with steep cliffs on either side, so extra caution is advised if visiting with children. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views as the formations shift in color—from deep reds and browns to warm oranges and soft pinks—depending on the sunlight filtering through the clouds above.

Note: If you would like to make the most of your time, plan to visit both Rila Monastery and Stob Earth Pyramids in one Bansko trip!

Dobarsko Church - One of the Best Day Trips from Bansko

Dobarsko Church

Distance: 21 km

Transportation Mode: Car

Entrance Fee: Donation Basis

Famous for its mysterious and extraordinary frescoes, Dobarsko Church is not only one of the most accessible day trips from Bansko, but also one of the most spiritual and captivating. Officially known as the Church of St. Teodor Tiron and St. Teodor Stratilat, this small yet remarkable religious site is nestled on the southern slopes of the Rila Mountains in the village of Dobarsko.

What makes the church particularly unique are its three round eastern-facing windows and the small ventilation holes scattered throughout the walls—an architectural feature that has helped preserve its vibrant frescoes for over 400 years. These artworks remained hidden beneath layers of black soot, caused by centuries of candle smoke, until they were accidentally rediscovered around 40 years ago during routine cleaning.

Despite its modest size, the church is adorned with more than 460 painted figures. Among the most unusual are two depictions of Jesus Christ inside what appear to be spacecraft surrounded by flames—a feature that continues to intrigue historians and visitors alike. Dobarsko Church is also notable for its rare inclusion of a large number of female saints, as well as full-length portraits of all twelve apostles.

Note: You can easily combine the Dancing Bears Park in Belitsa and the Church in Dobarsko in one day trip from Bansko!

Dancing Bears Park in Belitsa - One of the Best Day trips from Bansko

Bear Sanctuary in Belitsa

Distance: 33km

Transportation Mode: Car

Entrance Fee: 10 LV per adult

Only 33 km away from the ski resort, the Bear Sanctuary in Belitsa is quite and unique day trip from Bansko! Covering more than 120,000 sq meters, the park is a sanctuary for 15 bears, which were once victim to abuse. Surrounded by dense green forests, the park provides a safe and secure environment, in which the bears are taught how to develop their natural instincts and learn once again how to live in their original habitat.

If you are unfamiliar with the history of dancing bears, it’s a cruel practice that dates back to the Middle Ages. Cubs were captured at a young age and trained through abusive methods to “dance” for human entertainment in streets and taverns. Shockingly, this inhumane tradition persisted across parts of Eastern Europe well into the 21st century. Thankfully, the Belitsa Bear Sanctuary has rescued many of these animals, offering them refuge and proper care. It’s no wonder the park is one of the most important and meaningful attractions near Bansko.

Visiting the Dancing Bears Park was, for me, a bittersweet experience. It was heartbreaking to hear the stories of these remarkable animals and the suffering they endured. Yet, knowing they are now safe, cared for, and finally able to live peacefully in a natural setting made the visit deeply memorable and impactful. As you leave the sanctuary, it’s a powerful reminder to support ethical wildlife practices and avoid any form of animal exploitation.

Note: There are close to 100 steps and various steep portions throughout the park. Comfortable shoes are required. Do not bring strollers!

Note: The road to the sanctuary in Belitsa is quite narrow, with some unpaved gravel sections—so drive carefully and take your time getting there.

Where to Stay in Bansko?

Dobrinishte

Distance: 9 km

Transportation Mode: Car / Bus / Train

Entrance Fee: Free

Located just 9 km from Bansko, Dobrinishte is a fantastic option for a day trip—especially if you’re traveling without a car. You can easily get the bus, which operates every hour or even hop on the scenic Rhodope Narrow Gauge Train.

With only 5 km of ski slopes, Dobrinishte is less crowded and well-known than Bansko, but that’s part of its charm. It’s an excellent choice for families with young children or beginners looking to ski or snowboard in a more relaxed setting. Beyond the slopes, Dobrinishte is renowned for its 17 mineral springs, making it one of the best places to unwind after a few days of hiking or skiing in the Pirin Mountains.

Each year, after our hiking adventures in Pirin National Park, we make it a point to spend a day at the Alpha Thermal Spa and Pool. The complex features a large swimming pool, a children’s pool, and a Jacuzzi—each with water temperatures ranging between 25°C and 40°C—perfect for soaking in the healing thermal waters and easing tired muscles.

For a more traditional and authentic experience, you can also visit the Dobrinishte Public Mineral Bath. Keep in mind, this is the original public bathhouse, so don’t expect a luxurious spa atmosphere. The facility is divided into male and female sections, with guests bathing nude, as per the tradition. If you prefer more privacy, you can book a private family bath by the hour for a quieter, more intimate experience.

Razlog

Distance: 7 km

Transportation Mode: Car / Bus / Train

Entrance Fee: Free

Peacefully nestled in a valley between Bulgaria’s three most iconic mountain ranges—Rila, Pirin, and the Rhodope—Razlog is a charming small town and a lesser-known ski resort. With regular buses and trains running throughout the day, it’s an easy destination to reach from Bansko, even if you do not have a car.

Much like nearby Dobrinishte, Razlog is compact, with just a handful of activities, but it offers a calm and scenic escape. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a slower-paced day while still being surrounded by the breathtaking, snow-capped peaks in the distance.

One of my favorite spots in Razlog is the Stapalata Scenic Walk. This short, well-maintained trail leads to the top of the highest hill in the valley, where a striking 12-meter-tall observation tower awaits. Climb to the top, and you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of jagged mountain peaks rising above the peaceful town below.

The walk is gentle and suitable for all ages, with plenty of benches and rest areas along the way. Feel free to explore the hill’s surroundings—there’s no risk of getting lost, and you might even come across some unique local wildlife and plant species!

Leshten and Kovachevitsa

Distance: 64 km

Transportation Mode: Car

Entrance Fee: Free

The mountain villages of Leshten and Kovachevitsa, located just an hour from Bansko, are ideal for a day trip filled with exploration and immersion into traditional Bulgarian culture and heritage.

Wandering along the cobblestone streets, lined with beautifully preserved houses—some dating back to the mid-19th century—feels like stepping back in time. Let yourself get lost in the narrow alleys to fully absorb the authentic atmosphere and timeless charm of these villages. Nowhere is the architectural beauty of Bulgaria’s Revival Period more evident than in the whitewashed stone houses, each one holding stories and secrets passed down through generations.

Like many rural areas in Bulgaria, Leshten and Kovachevitsa are quiet and sparsely populated today. But the few locals who remain are incredibly warm and welcoming—often eager to share a story, a smile, or even a home-cooked meal, even if you don’t speak the language.

Both villages have been recognized as architectural reserves, and you’ll find charming, family-run taverns and restaurants serving hearty, traditional Bulgarian dishes—well worth sampling during your visit.

Traveling in a foreign country can be intimidating, especially if you do not know the language. If you prefer to book a guided or private tour from Bansko check the options below:

Melnik

Distance: 103 km

Transportation Mode: Car

Entrance Fee: Free

With a population of just over 300, Melnik holds the title of the smallest town in Bulgaria. Yet, despite its size, Melnik offers a rich blend of culture, history, and wine, making it one of the most captivating day trips from Bansko. Its charming cobblestone streets, sweeping views, and renowned local wines make it a must-visit.

Wine lovers should definitely stop by the Wine Museum, located in the heart of town. Here, you can learn about traditional Bulgarian winemaking and, of course, sample some of the finest local vintages.

For those more interested in history, the Kordopulova House is not to be missed. Dating back to the 1750s, this grand mansion features a fascinating mix of Ottoman and Venetian architecture. Once the home of the affluent wine merchant Kordopulos, the house now welcomes visitors to explore its beautifully preserved interior, scenic gardens, and remarkable wine cellar.

Just 7 km from Melnik lies the Rozhen Monastery, one of Bulgaria’s most revered religious sites. Its serene setting and beautifully preserved frescoes—some of which date back to the 16th century—make it a peaceful and inspiring final stop on your day trip.

Jump on the Rhodope Narrow Gauge Train if you are looking for one of the most authentic and romantic day trips from Bansko. Running between Septeremvri and Dobrnishte, this is the last operational narrow gauge train in Bulgaria.

The journey is slow and scenic, winding through breathtaking mountain landscapes in vintage-style carriages that feel like a step back in time. It’s one of Bulgaria’s most unique travel experiences, offering an immersive glimpse into the country’s traditions and rural life.

Along the route, you’ll likely meet fellow travelers, but also many locals who still rely on the train for their daily commute. It’s this mix of nostalgia and everyday authenticity that makes the ride so special.

There’s nothing quite like veering off the typical tourist trail and discovering experiences like the Rhodope Narrow Gauge Train—a true highlight of any Bansko trip and a memory that will stay with you long after the ride ends.

I regret spending only a week in Romania, and I was not in Bansko. I did not think that this area had so many unique attractions. I would love to go back there to see the places you write about. I would like to see Rila Monastery, Stob Earth Pyramids, and Melnik the most.
